Maya Lin

Maya Lin, a Chinese American, she was born in Athens, Ohio. Her parents immigrated to the United States from China. Her works are mainly studies of landscape. She works with different materials in different scales in order to create work that is unique and interesting.

Her work combines arquitecture and the study of landscapes using materials to create the effect of real landscapes and imaginary landscapes by playing with size. Her installations engage with the problem of bringing land masses into architecture by translating landscapes, two real and one imagined, into the materials of architecture while inviting viewers to move under, on, or through the works.
Each of her works is composed by a single material, each material is chosen to evoke a different landscape. I find really interesting how in this installation she uses nothing but soil to create this piece of work, and how even if it is grass the shape of the piece reminds me of dunes and the desert. The way that she has aligned them creates a very interesting pattern, I really like how it is deep in the front of the dunes and then round in the back.
